On a crisp morning last week, Form 6 embarked on a journey to Pitch Hill in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. This adventure, initially postponed due to inclement weather, was an enlightening exploration of the delicate balance between nature and human impact.

The day’s purpose was clear: to investigate the consequences of human presence on the environment. Equipped with knowledge and skills from the staff at the Sayers Croft Field Study Centre, Form 6 delved into hands-on activities, comparing heavily worn and less-used footpaths. Using many different types of equipment they gathered invaluable data through infiltration tests, cross-sectional analyses, vegetation surveys, and soil compaction tests employing a dropped steel pin.

After the scientific pursuits, Form 6 engaged in a fun mapping exercise, fostering teamwork and creativity in small groups. Laughter and enthusiasm echoed through the hills as they discovered the intricacies of the terrain.

Back in the classroom, Form 6 displayed their newfound skills, utilising Google Docs and Google Sheets for a comprehensive project write-up. The success of this field trip wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated staff members who supported and guided the pupils throughout the day.

Form 6 can reflect on the invaluable lessons learned about our role in preserving the beauty of our environment.
