Cranleigh Prep travelled down to Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) on Monday to compete in our first girls’ football competition.
The girls played superbly well throughout, receiving high praise from Portsmouth FC Women’s manager Jay Sadler @sadler004. The format was a league system with the top two teams playing off for the cup, whilst the third and fourth teams playing for the plate. After winning the first four games, but losing the last two, it was thrilling to find out we would be playing in the high-profile cup final on the wonderful PGS main pitch.
The Cranleigh girls battled extremely well, keeping an excellent Coworth-Flexlands side at bay. The score ended 0-0 and so we headed to dreaded penalty kicks. Wonderfully, Gabby saved two penalties, with Matilda converting hers and Cranleigh took home the coveted IAPS trophy.
Penalties are always a lottery and it is always so hard on the losing side, so a massive congratulations must go to the Coworth-Flexlands girls who stepped up to take a spot-kick for their side.
A huge thanks to the staff at PGS for putting on a fantastic morning of football and well done to the U11 girls on putting girls’ football on the map at Cranleigh.
